Overview

This collection of documents on the Cold War continues the Ashbrook聽Center鈥檚 extended series of document collections covering major聽periods, themes, and institutions in American history and government.

The volume begins with George Kennan鈥檚 鈥渓ong telegram鈥 (1946) laying聽out the containment policy that the United States would follow in various聽forms throughout the struggle with the Soviet Union. It ends with the聽transcript of a phone call between President George H. W. Bush and聽German Chancellor Helmut Kohl in 1989 in which the two leaders discussed聽how to deal with the changes transforming Russia and bringing the Cold聽War to an end. It covers American aid to Europe in the early years of聽the Cold War and American intervention in subsequent years in conflicts聽around the world to contain the spread of Soviet power. Its documents聽also explore the domestic effects of the Cold War, chronicling how聽national security concerns affected relations between American citizens聽and between Americans and their government. This collection and its聽companion volumes 鈥 World War I and the Twenties, The Depression and聽New Deal, and World War II 鈥 comprise a detailed account of the major聽events of America鈥檚 20th century.
