State: Maryland (Born in New Jersey)

Age at Convention: 39

Date of Birth: 02/20/1748

Date of Death: 07/08/1826

Schooling: Princeton

Occupation: Educator, Lawyer, Prosecutor

Prior Political Experience: Maryland Attorney General 1778-1787

Committee Assignments: First Committee of Representation, Committee of Slave Trade

Convention Contributions: Arriving June 9, Martin participated in the convention regularly before he walked out towards the end and began campaigning against the constitution. During his time there, he was a stark advocate for small states and once gave a three hour speech against the Virginian plan. William Pierce noted he possesses a good deal of information, but he has a very bad delivery, and so extremely prolix, that he never speaks without tiring the patience of all who hear him.鈥
New Government Participation: After the convention, Martin continued his position as Maryland鈥檚 Attorney General until 1805. He served as Chief Judge of the Court of Oyer and Terminer in Baltimore 1813-1816. He eventually returned to being Attorney General in 1819 until 1822 when his poor health forced him to retire.
