Alexander Hamilton
This seminar will examine the impact of Alexander Hamilton on the creation of the American republic. Hamilton is frequently described as the father of Wall Street and an elitist who defended the interests of the 鈥渙ne percent鈥� while holding little regard for the 鈥渃ommon man.鈥� In the view of others, he was the personification of a rags to riches story 鈥� an immigrant genius who set the United States on the path to becoming an economic and military superpower. What is beyond dispute is that Hamilton created a number of institutions designed to enhance the power of the central government and create an 鈥淎merican鈥� identity. All of Hamilton’s policies were designed to convince his fellow citizens to 鈥渢hink continentally鈥� and to create a powerful commercial republic that would eventually overtake the great powers of Europe. In the end, Alexander Hamilton shaped not only the contours of the American economy, but all aspects of the American experiment.
This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing as the only readings, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. All attendees will receive a Letter of Attendance at the end of the seminar.
