Harlem Renaissance
Harlem became the hub of African-American culture in the 1920鈥檚 and 30鈥檚 and the extraordinary writing that developed during this time continues to influence American literature and culture. This seminar will explore the literature of the Harlem Renaissance in relation to its history as well as its social and cultural context. We will also examine the competing theories about race and racial identity that defined the Harlem Renaissance鈥檚 intellectual culture.
This program will be conducted as a Socratic discussion, utilizing as the only readings, and with聽Suzanne Brown聽facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.
