Westward Expansion: Conflict, Conversation and the Environment
America鈥檚 vision of westward expansion and its 鈥淢anifest Destiny鈥� sounded magnificent on paper, but what would it take to expand from sea to shing sea? This seminar will examine early visions of the west, the conflict that arose during the 19th century and the rise of the conservation and environmental movements in the 20th century. Primary documents as well as images from the Hudson River school of landscape paintings will be explored.
This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing as the only readings, and with Professor Tucker facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. 聽Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.
